Not only is this hei matau fish hook made in New Zealand from NZ Greenstone, it also carries the Ngai Tahu pounamu traceability code, so you can view the rock it came from, know the type of pounamu it is carved from, and learn its provenance. 

The fish hook is such an important Māori symbol, given that it was such an important implement to catch food (kai).

The particular Fish Hook photographed is made from Hapopo greenstone. The Hapopo colour ranges from medium to dark forest green, with a unique mottled texture. The name orginates from Kā Umu o Hapopo (Big Bay), located in Poutini ki te toka (South Westland).
